Enhanced Natural Terrain Landslide Inventory (ENTLI):
The Enhanced Natural Terrain Landslide Inventory (ENTLI) contains information on the distribution of about 109,000 natural terrain landslides throughout the Hong Kong S.A.R. Natural terrain refers to terrain that has not been modified substantially by human activity, but includes areas where grazing, hillfires or deforestation may have occurred. These landslides are identified by 1:5,000 map scale serial numbers and are divided into two groups: "recent" if they occurred within the time scale of the available aerial photographs, and "relict" if they occurred earlier.
The acquisition and digitisation of the ENTLI information is fully explained in the Final Report: The Enhanced Natural Terrain Landslide Inventory (copy available for viewing at the Civil Engineering Library, LG1/F in Civil Engineering & Development Building). The following points should be noted with respect to the ENTLI Landslide locations.
- The ENTLI Landslides were identified solely from available aerial photographs taken for the years 1924 to 2009 inclusive. No field validation was undertaken.
- There are cases where natural terrain landslides have been mapped within areas which have subsequently been developed.
- Identification of natural terrain landslides on the aerial photographs may have been hindered by poor image resolution, cloud cover, ground shadows or vegetation cover.
- Coverage, availability, scale and resolution of the aerial photographs impose certain limitations. Consequently, all landslides may not have been identified within certain time periods.
The ENTLI should only be used to provide a general indication of the distribution of landslides on natural terrain. It should not be used as the basis for individual site assessments. Detailed assessments should include, amongst other things, a comprehensive examination of all relevant high and low altitude aerial photographs as well as field validation. Further details about the ENTLI can be obtained via e-mail from Chief Geotechnical Engineer/Planning Division at samuelkcng@cedd.gov.hk.
Users can review the ENTLI information in the vicinity of their desired locations by accessing the maps via one of the methods described in the following sections; i.e. by Building Name, by Street Name, by Co-ordinates or by Slope Number.
