Hong Kong has a
history of tragic landslides; in the 50
years from the end of World War II, more
than 470 people lost their lives.
Landslide risk to the community has been
substantially reduced since the
Government established the Geotechnical
Engineering Office (GEO) on 13 July 1977;
but with our unique environment of dense
urban development on steep hillsides and
torrential summer rainfall, the risk can
never be completely eliminated. The whole
community has a part to play in helping
to keep landslide risk as low as
possible.
|
In 1998, the GEO completed an intensive four-year project to catalogue all sizable man-made slopes and retaining walls in Hong Kong. At present, some 60,000 of them were catalogued, This Slope Catalogue will be kept updated. |

As part of this project, we have developed a computerized Slope Information System (SIS) containing data on all of these slopes and retaining walls. The SIS is a geographic information system which integrates different types of slope information linked to geographic and textual databases. The SIS is a valuable source of information to geotechnical engineers, property owners, management companies and the general public. However, it would not tell the public whether a particular slope is safe or not because this requires detailed investigation by a professional geotechnical engineer, and also depends on the current standard of maintenance of the slope concerned. | In order to serve the
community better, we have set up the
internet version of the Slope Information
System (SIS) to provide free and
convenient public access to slope
information from homes and offices. |
 |
In any project
to compile such a large number of data, some
errors are unavoidable. If you find any errors or
have any problem while using this website, or if
you have any suggestions for improvement, please
e-mail us at mailto:hkss@cedd.gov.hk.
Members of the public
wishing to obtain slope information can use the
following methods:
1. Internet version of the Slope Information
System (SIS)
Internet version of the SIS is now available for
free public access 24-hours a day. Latest
Internet technologies are employed for searching
and display functions of slopes and retaining
walls records..
2. Application Form for Information from the
Slope Catalogue
Application for information from the Slope
Catalogue can also be made by submitting an
Application Form (Slope Safety Form 01). This
Application Form is available from District
Offices, in fax or mail from the 24-hours Slope
Safety Hotline (telephone number 2885 5888) or by
downloading from the Applications Forms Downloading Area of the Civil Engineering and Development Department
Website.
