Community Advisory Unit (CAU)

To enhance public understanding of slope safety and reinforce private owners' awareness of their slope maintenance responsibility, the Community Advisory Unit (CAU) of the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) provide advice and information on slope safety and slope maintenance matters to the general public. The CAU has the following principal functions:

  1. Organize slope safety and maintenance seminars and talks for private slope owners and bodies involving in slope maintenance ;

  2. Provide a meet-the-public service to answer queries and provide information on slope safety matters ;

  3. Contact private owners or their representatives who have received Dangerous Hillside Orders to advise them on how to proceed with the necessary slope improvement works ; and

  4. Meet Owners' Corporations and Mutual Aid Committees to advise them on how to proceed with the necessary slope maintenance works.

The CAU reaches out to the community by organizing seminars and talks on slope safety and slope maintenance matters. A programme of 'Meet-the-Public' services is also provided to answer concerns and give slope and related information to the public.

The CAU takes a proactive approach to contact those private slope owners who have received Dangerous Hillside Orders. When needed, the Unit offers advice on how to proceed with the investigation and implementation of the necessary slope improvement works for prompt and satisfactory compliance with the requirements of Dangerous Hillside Orders.

The CAU also provides a face to face advisory service and organises seminars for Owners' Corporations and Mutual Aid Committees on slope maintenance and slope safety matters.

The CAU can be contacted at telephone No. 2760 5800 or by electronic mails at (cau@cedd.gov.hk).

Slope Safety Roving Exhibition
Meet the Public

"Meet-the-Public" Services

Public communication is regarded as an essential element of the GEO's Slope Safety System. Partnership with the community, education, promotion and advisory services in building up public participation and awareness are important components of successful landslide risk mitigation. The GEO has been providing a "Meet-the-Public" service to reach out to answer public's queries on matters relating to slope safety and maintenance.

The Meet-the-Public services usually take place in popular shopping centres in association with the GEO's slope safety roving exhibitions, and are also held in public community centres together with slope maintenance seminars/talks.

Professional Geotechnical Engineers of the CAU take part in these "Meet-the-Public" events, and they are well-equipped to answer public queries and provide information on slope safety matters. Members of the public are welcome to come to the session to consult our engineers about slope safety and maintenance matters. The venue and time of each "Meet-the-Public" session are announced in the "What's New" section in this Website.

Slope Safety and Maintenance Talk

Slope Safety and Maintenance Seminars

As part of GEO's initiatives to enhance public awareness on slope safety, the CAU conducts seminars and talks on the importance of slope safety, slope maintenance and personal precautionary measures for free public participation.

The seminars and talks generally cover two aspects - slope safety and slope maintenance. The former involves information on the GEO's services and functions in safeguarding Hong Kong from landslide danger. The latter covers the technical aspects of slope maintenance standards as described in Geoguide 5: Guide to Slope Maintenance, and is very useful to private slope owners, property managers and organizations involving in slope maintenance works. In addition, individual talks can be organized to those private slope owners who have received Dangerous Hillside Orders or Advisory Letters, to advise them on how to proceed with the necessary slope improvement works.

At special request, CAU can tailor the contents of the seminars and talks to the needs of the audiences. Organizations or parties interested in arranging joint seminars with GEO are welcome to contact CAU at Telephone No. 2760 5800.

Outline of the contents of the talks can be downloaded here (only available in Chinese version).
